I’m in [INSERT INDUSTRY HERE]. What do you do?
My formula for telling someone what you do and why they should care in 7 seconds or less hasn’t changed much at all in the last 4 years …
Until about 10 minutes into the debut podcast of Business Strategies for Tech Professionals
EPISODE 1: What you do vs. What you tell people you do.
I’ll post the link soon
As fast as my new-found editing skills will allow me
But I couldn’t sit on this little gem
Courtesy of my new co-host Jerry Black:
When someone asks you what you do
Rather than launch into your script
Simply say, “I’m in tech”
Or whatever industry you’re in
And throw it back to them:
And what do you do?
This ensures that if/when you are asked to expand on your answer
You don’t sound like you’re waiting for approval
Or facing the blank page
Or testing it out at an open-mic for amateur stand-up’s
Instead
You’re much more likely to put what you do
In context
To what your fellow conversant does:
Well, it’s like how you mentioned that you …
BONUS: You’re now talking about what you do
To an audience
That’s essentially been warmed up
By you.
I’m here,
Kevin
