All of our thoughts are stories. ~ Buddhist Meditation Master Dipa Ma
Whether we’re aware of it or not
We tell ourselves stories almost every minute of our existence
Stories about what’s wrong with us
Stories about what’s right
Tales of perceived injustices
Retellings of how we crushed it
As if there’s an audience listening
With rapt attention
See if this helps:
Take a minute
Or 25
And observe your thoughts
Without stopping them
Really letting them run wild
And just as quickly
Make a new one up intentionally
From whole cloth
As a recording on your phone
On a video
Or at the keyboard
Of you pushing out some words
About the value you offer your clients
Keep pushing
Even if the words start to tell a story about how:
You don’t know what to say
How this Kevin guy is full of it
How you don’t have time
Which you don’t
Thus the timer
Keep talking/typing/pushing
Without fail
Without shutting up
Without slowing down
As if you were talking back to yourself
As you you did to your parents when you were little
Talk about all the good things you do for your clients
The things you’re most proud of
As if you were your own talent agent
Selling your supervisor
On how she should give you a raise
Just keep going
Right past the:
Doubts
Delusions
Distractions
And even the nonsense
Keep going
Until your thoughts do
What thoughts have always done:
Tell a story
Of just how good you are
At what you do.
I’m here,
Kevin
